Pre-requisite courses: none
Lecturer: TBA
Required text/s: to be announced
This course examines a number of theories relating to communication and culture. The first stage (weeks1-6) covers the theoretical frameworks concerned with understanding and explaining cultural difference. It will include examination of anthropological work relating to the establishment of cultural variables, and a critique of culture, as well as discussion of the role of language in the understanding of communication and culture.
The second stage ( weeks 7-11) will focus on the uses off these cultural differences in light of the work of poststructuralist analyses of modernity and globalisation. Offering an alternative reading of communication and culture, it will focus on the construction of meaning, and the consequences of this for communication patterns in the modern world.
