This course is the major research component of the Master of Design.
Major Project provides an option to complete the Master of Design with a personal research project rather than with course work. The course is worth 48 credit points the eqivalent of 4 courses. It may suite students who have a specific interest that relates to their professional practice or may be useful in informing some future direction in their area of interest and may or may not be work related.
It may be that a student has a passion for a particular topic and research into it may be helpeful in developing this -leading on to further study such as a PhD.
Students can undertake this research in a number of ways - it could be thesis based or a visual project or a combination of both. What form the Project takes will be worked out with the supervisor and the agreed outcome will be achieved by working with the supervisor to complete the research program.
Undertaking 'Research Methods' is a necessary preliminary as it introduces students to the ways of carrying out reseach in a properly structured and accountable way.
The course -'Design Contract' is a prerequisite and is designed to provide the topic basis and research methodology. As well as completing Research Methods and Design Contract students must have completed another 6 courses including 4 core. ( all together the equivalent of the Graduate Diploma -or 8 courses )
Students may also be expected to present their progress to their peers in class seminars. The final presentation will be in the form of a written dissertation or visual project or combination.
The Major Project course runs over two semesters - hence the two course codes - A and B
Students must enroll in each semester under the appropriate number.
